Cuticle Oil: When Should You Apply It? Before or After Gel & Semi-Permanent Manicures? | LuluNails Belgium
Cuticle oil: before or after application? Find out when to apply it, why to avoid oily products before gel or semi-permanent polish, and how to care for your cuticles with LuluNails.
Dry, whitish or stiff cuticles can make a manicure look less neat, even when the gel, Builder Gel or semi-permanent polish is applied perfectly.
Cuticle oil is therefore one of the products worth using to care for the skin around the nails.
But one question often comes up:
Should you apply the oil before or after the treatment?
The answer is important.
Oil is very beneficial after a manicure and fordaily care, but applying an oily product just before a gel, base coat or semi-permanent nail varnish can disrupt the preparation process if the oily film isis not properly removed.
In this guide, LuluNails Belgium explains when to apply cuticle oil, how to use it and what mistakes to avoid.
What is cuticle oil used for?
Cuticle oil is primarily intended for the care of the skin around the nail.
Depending on its formulation, it can help, in particular, to:
- moisturise the cuticle area;
- soften dry, flaky skin;
- visually improve the appearance of the nail contour;
- provide a neat finish after a manicure;
- regularly care for the skin around the nails.

Cuticle oil before or after a manicure?
Before application: generally not
Just before applying:
Rubber Base
Builder Gel
or Acrygel,
the aim is generally to ensure the nail plate is properly prepared in accordance with the system’s protocol.
Applying oil just before the Base can leave an greasy film on the nail.
LuluNails already recommends in its Cleaner/Nail Prep/Primer guide toavoid using oil immediately before an application when no subsequent step involves its complete removal. LuluNails
After application: yes
Once:
Base colour Top Coat
Once these have been correctly applied and cured, the oil can be used around the cuticles.
It’s actually an excellent finishing touch.
Why might the oil cause problems before a semi-permanent application?
To ensure good adhesion, the nail plate must be prepared according to the system used.
An oily residue can create a surface that is less suitable for adhesion.
Residues may come from:
- cuticle oil;
- hand cream;
- touching with your fingers;
- oily products;
- dust or contaminants.
This does not mean that oil is bad.
It simply means:
oil = aftercare following application
and
preparation = a clean surface before application.
When exactly should the oil be applied?
I generally recommend the following order:
Preparation → Base coat → Colour / Build → Top coat → Final curing → Cuticle oil
The oil is therefore applied at the end.
For a professional manicure, apply a small amount around each nail and then gently massage the area.
Can you use the oil every day?
Yes, regular use around the cuticles is possible provided the product is used in accordance with the instructions.
For example, you can incorporate it into a routine:
in the evening → a small amount → massage around the cuticles.
There is no need to completely cover your fingers in oil.
A small amount, applied evenly, is usually sufficient to care for the area.
Cuticle oil after builder gel
Once you have finished:
Builder gel → any colour → Top Coat → final curing,
you can apply the oil around the cuticles.
This gives the treatment a neater finish.
However, the oil is not intended to:
repair poor gel structure
or
mechanically forcemechanically cause a gel to break.
It remains, first and foremost, a cuticle care product.
Oil after Flexible Builder Gel
The same principle applies with a Flexible Builder Gel.
Complete your gel application.
Then:
Top Coat → curing → oil around the cuticles.
The oil can thus complete a Nude, Milky or natural manicure.
Oil after Semi-Permanent Polish
After applying Semi-Permanent Polish:
- Base Coat;
- first colour;
- second coat if necessary;
- Top Coat;
- curing;
- degreasing if required by the Top Coat used;
- cuticle oil.
It is at this stage that the treatment can be added without disrupting the initial preparation.
Oil with a No-Wipe Top Coat
With a residue-free Top Coat, complete the curing process according to the protocol and then apply your oil around the cuticles.
You do not need to apply oil directly to the entire glossy surface of the top coat.
Focus it mainly around the nail.
Should oil be applied to the natural nail plate before the Nail Prep?
I do not recommend doing so immediately before the preparation.
Nail Prep is specifically used at a stage where the aim is to prepare the surface for adhesion.
Applying an oily product first and then immediately trying to remove it creates an unnecessary step.
A more logical routine is:
oil between treatments
then, on the day of application:
proper preparation → Nail Prep / Primer according to protocol → Base.
Cuticle oil or cleaner: what’s the difference?
These are two completely different products.
Cuticle oil
It is used to nourish and soften the cuticles.
Cleaner
It is used for certain cleaning or degreasing steps as per the protocol.
The oil therefore does not replace the Cleaner.
Nor does the Cleaner replace a cuticle treatment.
Cuticle oil or Nail Prep?
Once again, their functions are opposite.
Nail Prep
It is used during nail plate preparation, depending on the system.
Oil
It is used as a treatment, particularly after the service.
It’s easy to remember:
Nail Prep → before
Oil → after.
Cuticle oil or emollient?
A cuticle emollient and an oil do not necessarily serve the same purpose.
An emollient product is generally designed to make it easier to work on certain areas of the cuticles, depending on its formulation.
An oil is mainly used to nourish and soften the skin.
The procedure always depends on the specific product.
Why are my cuticles dry after a treatment?
Several factors can influence the appearance of the skin around the nails:
- frequent hand washing;
- household cleaning products;
- cold;
- dry air;
- manual labour;
- repeated use of certain products;
- lack of regular care.
It is also important to distinguish between:
dry cuticles
and
irritated or damaged skin.
A cosmetic oil can help to care for dry cuticles, but it must not be used to mask severe irritation or a wound.
Can oil be applied to injured cuticles?
An area with:
a wound, bleeding, significant inflammation or an unusual appearance
should not simply be covered with cosmetic products.
First, allow the area to be assessed and to heal properly.
Cuticle oil is a cosmetic product, not a medical treatment.
Cuticle oil after a Russian manicure
After a Russian manicure has been carried out correctly, followed by a full application, the oil can be applied right at the very end.
The order can be:
preparation → Base/Builder → colour → Top Coat → oil.
It helps to visually finish off the area around the nail.
LuluNails already has a comprehensive guide dedicated to the Russian Manicure, which provides an excellent internal link. LuluNails
Oil to use after gel removal
After correctly removing a gel manicure and finishing the preparation of the natural nail, oil can be applied around the cuticles.
But please note:
it does not instantly ‘repair’ a nail that has been excessively filed.
If the nail plate has been significantly thinned, it will need to grow back.
Cuticle care supports the maintenance of this area, but is no substitute for a properly carried out nail removal.
Does the oil make nails grow faster?
I would be cautious about making that claim.
Cuticle oil mainly improves the condition of the skin around the nail, depending on its formulation.
You shouldn’t promise that it will make the nail grow much faster.
The natural rate of growth depends on many factors.
A more accurate way to put it would be:
oil = maintenance and softer cuticles.
Does the oil prevent nails from breaking?
Not on its own.
A break may depend on:
- length;
- structure;
- the natural condition of the nail;
- impacts;
- incorrect removal;
- flexibility;
- type of construction.
Oil is useful for maintaining the area around the nail, but it is no substitute for a proper nail structure.
Can oil cause the gel to lift?
If you applyoil onto the nail plate just before application and an oily film remains, this can interfere with the preparation and contribute to poor adhesion.
However, oil applied correctly once the application is complete around the cuticles is a different matter.
The key point is therefore:
when it is applied.
Should you wash your hands after applying the oil?
Not straight away if your aim is to let the product work as per the instructions.
Apply a small amount and massage it in.
Just avoid using too much.
If you use the oil just before your next application, the plate will then need to bebe properly prepared according to your protocol.
How much oil should I use?
A few small drops or a thin layer around each cuticle area may be sufficient, depending on the product’s format.
More oil does not automatically mean more benefits.
The aim is to spread the product evenly, not to leave your hands completely greasy.
When should the oil be applied in the salon?
The best time is usually:
at the end of the appointment.
After:
Top coat, curing and any final degreasing, apply the oil and then massage it around the cuticles.
This is an excellent final step before the final photo.
